Five fundamentals every young basketball player should own

Five fundamentals every young basketball player should own

Before fancy moves or deep threes, every youth player needs a toolbox of basics. At BBB Team we drill these habits early so confidence grows naturally — and the game slows down instead of feeling chaotic.

1. Athletic stance and balance

Feet wide, knees soft, eyes up. A strong stance makes ballhandling, passing, and defense ten times easier. Practice holding position while a partner swings a hand through your vision — you should not straighten up or reach.

2. Two-hand and dominant-hand control

Stationary pounding, pound-cross, and pocket dribbles build touch. The goal is not “flashy” — it is quiet hands and eyes on defenders, not the ball.

3. Passing on time and on target

Chest passes, bounce passes, and skip passes only count if they arrive where the teammate can score. We teach “pass fake, pivot, then pass” to stay strong against pressure.

4. Defensive slides and closeouts

Defense wins playing time. Short, choppy slides, high hand on closeout, and contest without fouling are skills we rep every week.

5. Finishing with either foot

From layup lines to “Mikan” footwork around the rim, finishing through contact matters more than long-range shots at young ages. We celebrate makes off glass as much as swishes.

Take it home

Ten minutes a day of form shooting or ballhandling beats one long cram session. Parents can help by clearing space, setting a timer, and cheering effort — not makes and misses. Questions about the right drills for your child’s age group? Reach out through our contact page.
