Building a consistent jump shot for growing bodies
Building a consistent jump shot for growing bodies
A jumper is not one motion — it is balance, pocket, lift path, and finish linked together. At BBB Team we repeat the same words so muscle memory catches up even when legs grow longer mid-season.
Grip and guide hand
The shooting hand pads the ball; the guide hand is a shelf, not a second pusher. Thumbs make a “T” for many players, but hand size changes the look — consistency matters more than copying a pro.
Rhythm: dip, lift, hold
A small dip or “pocket” helps rhythm. The ball lifts through the eyebrow in a straight line to the rim; we finish with “hand in the cookie jar” and freeze until the ball hits rim or net.
Footwork on the catch
Inside foot pivot on a catch-and-shoot saves time. We practice hop vs. one-two depending on age so players arrive square without travelling.
After a growth spurt
Legs get longer, release point drops, and misses go short. Go closer to the rim, shorten range for two weeks, and rebuild range with form — not ego.
Count makes, celebrate process
Chart swishes vs. right-left misses to learn bias. Parents can rebound and whisper one cue only (usually “balance” or “guide hand”), not a highlight reel of advice. Need a form check? Bring a phone clip to practice — our shooting coaches will happily review it.
